Law Uniforms 101 : All You Need To Know

Most professions are recognized by their dress codes and the same extends to all the major practitioners of law  - lawyers. The dress code for lawyers may vary subject to the different geographical locations but in most jurisdictions, the traditional colors of black and white remain prominent. There are some notable anomalies like Canada where the code is red and white. Whatever may be the color, it goes without saying that law uniforms are the most elegant in comparison to other professions. Here is a brief guide for most things essential to law uniforms, what you can wear, what you must never!

Official in court

Lawyers have to stringently abide by the dress code when they are in the court premises for legal proceedings because the sanctity, decorum, norms and etiquettes set through decades and centuries, mandates them to dress in accordance with the principles of one of the most noblest professions known to man. It's advisable that you source your attire from the most reputed law uniform manufacturers or retailers, because when you go wrong with the dress code, it has far more ramifications than you realize on the surface.

Formal for business

The law practitioners have to dress is when they go for business engagements outside of the court premises. They are expected to dress smart and professionally and most swear by white shirts beneath black tailored suits. For interviews or meetings with clients, it's a norm to wear suits in common colors.

Casual for Informal events

When they are outside of the court and have to attend some business of a less formal nature, it's commonplace for many to ditch the conservative suit. Everything from golf shirts on trousers and khakis' have been tried by many and deemed acceptable by the community at large.

Briefcases

Though they aren't considered by many as an essential of the dress code for lawyers, they are still very important for the professional and it's ethos. The masses can't imagine a lawyer going to the court without a briefcase, simply because it has become a tradition, cemented through their regular use through years and decades. The briefcase should be functional to carry all essentials to the court or office and also adhere to the set standards for the code. Black is the way to go for the majority and anything out-of-the-box or fancy is frowned upon. Black is sacrosanct for the briefcase !

What women shouldn't wear

For women, happenings in the recent past push more focus on what they shouldn't wear than what they should. Certain items of clothing have been deemed completely unacceptable by the industry and needs to be avoided at all costs. We're talking open backs, stretch pants, low-cut tops, miniskirts and many closely related items of clothing. It's an unspoken rule yet standard norm, that female lawyers shouldn't wear anything which is too revealing.

After taking note of the aforementioned which strictly prohibits any sense of indecency imaginable, there are a lot of options for women lawyers to wear. It's on the same wavelength as the code for men and it changes depending on the different situations, the professional take them too.
